Murdock’s Serial Position (memory) Flashcards
Aim
If remembering words as affected by how many you had to remember
Methods
1) use the 4000 most common words at random
2) 103 participants listened to lists of words and had to recall what they heard
Results
Recall was dependent on the position of the word but wasn’t affected by the length of the list
Conclusion
The position of the word effects the likelihood of recall with the highest recall being from recency
Primary effect
Words at the beginning of the list were remembered more than the middle
Recency effect
Words at the end of the list were remembered more than the end
Evaluation (Pros)
Used a lab - controlled variables and environment
Evaluation (Cons)
Artificial lab - not reflective of real life experiences
