Bartletts War Of The Ghost Study (memory) Flashcards
Aim
To use a story from a different culture to see how cultural expectations affect memory
Method
1) participants are asked to repeat the story they’ve just heard
2) this is repeated with the revised story to different participants
(None of the participants knew the aim of the study)
Results
- the story was shortened by omissions
- language and concepts were changed
- the recalled story became fixed
Conclusion
The transformations made the material easier to remember as we filled gaps with knowledge of social situations
Evaluations to discuss
- lack of control
- biased results
- an unusual story
Evaluation: lack of control
Participants were not told accurate recall was important suggesting recall is more accurate than concluded
Evaluation: biased results
Bartletts beliefs may have affected the results so we cannot fully trust the conclusion
Evaluation: unusual story
The study doesn’t tell us anything about everyday memory because the recall was affected by cultural expectations
