How does it spread?
A
Droplets

Infective period?
A
7 days before and 9 days after parotid swelling starts

Incubation period?
A
2-3 weeks

Symptoms?
A
- Fever
- Malaise
- Muscle pain
- Parotitis (earache, pain on eating) which is initially unilateral but becomes bilateral in 70%

Prevention method?
A
MMR vaccine

Management?
A
Rest and paracetamol for temperature/discomfort

What should you do once you diagnose this condition?
A
Notify public health as it is a notifiable disease

Complications?
A
- Orchitis (typically occurs 4-5 days after start of parotitis)
- Hearing loss - usually unilateral and transient
- Meningoencephalitis
- Pancreatitis
