Causative organism and what form of pathogen is it?
Chlamydia trachomatis and intracellular pathogen
Incubation period?
1-3 weeks
How often does it present with symptoms?
30% of women and 50% of men present with symptoms
Symptoms in women?
Cervicitis (discharge, bleeding), dysuria
Symptoms in men?
Urethral discharge, dysuria
Potential complications?
- Epididymitis
- PID
- Endometritis
- Increased risk of ectopic pregnancies
- Infertility
- Reactive arthritis
- Perihepatitis
Investigation of choice?
Nucleic-acid amplification test (NAAT)
How to perform NAAT in men and women?
Women: vulvovaginal swab
Men: urine test
When should chlamydia testing be carried out after a possible exposure?
2 weeks after a possible exposure
Treatment?
Doxycycline 7 day course
Treatment for pregnant women?
Azithromycin or erythromycin or amoxicillin
Contact tracing rules for men with urethral symptoms?
All contacts since, and in the four weeks prior to, the onset of symptoms
Contact tracing rules for women and asymptomatic men?
All partners from the last 6 months or the most recent sexual partner should be contacted
How to manage contacts of confirmed Chlamydia cases?
Offer treatment prior to the results of their investigations being known (treat then test)
