What is fossilization?
The process in the learning of a secondary language in which the student has more and more difficult furthering his fluency in the language and can’t learn anymore.
What is inter language?
When a student who has not become fully proficient get but is approximating the target language and preserving some features of the first language or over generalizing target language rules.
What is the silent period?
During the learning phase student focus on comprehension and do little talking
What is language loss?
When L1 is no longer enforced and focus is on L2. L1 is lost.
What is interference/transfer?
When students are learning L2 and they make errors that reflect the influence of L1
What is BICS & CALP?
It’s a model of language proficiency that separates language for social interaction from language for academics
How long does BICS take to develop? And what does it involve?
Approximately two years to develop fully under ideal circumstances. Often context heavy, meaningful interactions supplemented by nonverbal gestures.
What does CALP stand for?
Cognitive academic language proficiency
How long does CALP take to develop & what does it entail?
Approximately 5 to 7 years to develop fully under ideal circumstances. Requires understanding of abstract language concepts a grasp of literacy and is most often decontextualized
What are the first 2 quadrants of the diagnostic pie?
Quadrant one and quadrant to our typical language learning abilities students.
Quadrant one has adequate background where quadrant two has limitations of linguistic exposure and environmental experiences
Both quadrants may need bilingual education, sheltered English, as well as instruction in English as a second language.
But quadrant two needs additional in Richmond experiences such as tutoring and RtI

Both are language impairment students.
Watching three has adequate background where quadrant four has limitations of linguistic experience and environmental exposure.
Both need bilingual special-education, & English special education with primary language support.
