MTLO Flashcards
Turbine Lube Oil
Purpose
Provides clean and tempered oil for bearing lubrication and cooling during normal and
emergency conditions for the Main Turbine, Generator, and Exciter
Unless permission has been obtained from operations director what should you NOT do with coolers?
Do not swap coolers at POWER
Main Turbine Oil conditioner
(LO-L-1 or bowser)
Purify main turbine lube oil continuously by removing water and
particulate materials. Design standard requires 10% of oil system purified per
hour (10 hours to purify entire LO volume), which the Bowser exceeds.
Main bowser exhauster
(LO-E-1)
Location, Power supply
Location: 305’ TB on top of bowser
Power supply: 1C TP MCC
LO-T-3 Exhauster (LO-E-3)
Location, Power supply
Location: 305’ TB west side of main bowser
Power supply: 1C TP MCC
Motor Drive Suction Pump (LO-P-4)
Location, power supply
Location: 322’ TB inside oil reservoir
Power supply: 1A TP MCC
motor Drive Suction Pump (LO-P-4)
Auto start/purpose
Auto start: when LO-P-10 suction pressure ≤10#
Purpose: Provides suction pressure of 30 psig for LO-P-10 during start up when main turbine speed <95% rated speed
Turning Gear Oil Pump
(LO-P-5)
Location, power supply
Location: inside the oil reservoir
Power supply: 1A ES MCC
Turning Gear Oil Pump
(LO-P-5)
Auto Start/Trip
Auto Start:** Auto starts ≤15# @ Bearings or <190 # @ LO-P-10 discharge**
Trips: 27/86 Lockout of AUTO Start on ES + UV (can be manually started)
Emergency Bearing Oil Pump
(LO-P-6)
Location/power supply
Location: 322’ TB inside oil reservoir
Power supply: 1C DC
Emergency Bearing Oil Pump
(LO-P-6)
Auto Start
Auto starts on <170# @ LO-P-10 discharge if LO-P-5 doesn’t have
discharge pressure OR LO-P-5 loses power (breaker OPENS, bus de-energized,
thermal overload).** LO-P-6 will continue to run until manually shut down.**
Main Shaft Driven Oil Pump (LO-P-10 or MSOP)
Purpose
Driven at 3600 rpm from the main shaft to supply oil to discharge
header at 200-225 psig to provide bearing lube oil and drive booster pump LO-P-11 when Main Turbine >95% speed. LO-P-10 requires 15-20# suction pressure
Turbine Driven Booster Pump (LO-P-11)
purpose
An oil turbine driven pump that supplies oil at a pressure of
approximately 35# to suction of LO-P-10 when turbine shaft speed > 95%
Turbine Driven Booster Pump (LO-P-11)
Inlet baffler valve purpose
Throttles inlet to LO-P-11 to regulates booster pump
discharge at 35# @ rated speed
Turbine Driven Booster Pump (LO-P-11)
bypass baffler valve purpose
Throttles excess flow to LO-P-11 turbine into a bypass line,
supplying bearing header oil @ 35 psig at bearings and 50# at pump discharge.
Lube oil transfer pump (LO-P-1)
Location, power supply
Location: 305’ TB between east stairwell and Condensate chem add tanks
Power supply: 1A TP MCC
Main Turbine Oil Filter Pump (LO-P-2)
Location, power supply
Location: 305’ TB West side of main bowser
Power supply: 1C TP MCC
High Pressure Lift Oil Pump (LO-P-7A/B/C/D/E/F/G/H/I/J)
Location/power supply
Location: 355’ TB West of Main Turbine (A – F in NW Corner, G-J in SW Corner)
Power Supply: 7A through 7F →1A ES MCC, 7G through 7J → 1B ES MCC
High Pressure Lift Oil Pump (LO-P-7A/B/C/D/E/F/G/H/I/J)
Interlocks
Start permissive
trips
Interlocks: ALL pumps must be running OR bypassed to place TB on turning gear
Start Permissive: >5# Suction Pressure
Trips: Pump trips on <5# Suction Pressure, 27/86 Lockout on ES and UV
Explain what happens based on Bearing header pressure
Normal to low (3 things)
25-35# = normal bearing header pressure
≤15# Bearing Header LO-P-10 Discharge = LO-P-5 auto starts
≤12# bearing/24# at sensor location = the turbine will trip
Explain what happens with MSOP suction/discharge pressures from normal to low (3 things)
200-225# = normal bearing/LO-P-10 discharge pressure
<190# LO-P-10 Discharge= LO-P-5 Auto starts
<170# LO-P-10 Discharge = LO-P-6 Auto starts if LO-P-5 is not running
L&P
When do you change filter bag on bowser to avoid filter bag overflow?
When oil head above filter element has risen to 6 inches as indicated by filter compartment gauge glass
What lube oil cooler outlet temperature do you maintain and with what valve when turbine is at rated speed?
110-120F via SC-V-5A/B
What lube oil cooler outlet temperature do you maintain and with what valve when turbine is on turning gear?
80-90F via SC-V-5A/B
Lube Oil Fire Hazard Reduction
(3 things)
- Pressurized piping near hot components have guard pipe (pipe in a
pipe), which returns any leakage back to reservoir - Tanks have covers that rapidly relieve oil vapor/H2 explosion
- Minimize leakage by only placing threaded connections inside guard
pipes and minimal use of pipe joints
Lube Oil Coolers (LO-C-2A/B)
Location, power supply
Location: 322 TB inside Main Lube Oil Reservoir LO-T-3
Power supply: SCCW cools oil before entering bearing header, and only one
cooler in service at a time. DO NOT SWAP COOLERS AT POWER unless
permission has been obtained from Operations Director
SC-V-5A/B throttled manually to maintain what?
To maintain normal operating temperature between 110-120F and 80-90F during startup and shut down
Oil too cold causes what?
Oil whip, vibration and possible shaft/bearing damage
Oil too hot causes what?
Viscosity Breakdown (less heat removal and lubrication, may lead to shaft/bearing damage
Less than what bearing header pressure will turbine trip, and how many logic signals does it take?
<12#, 2 out of 3 logic at LO-PS-1700 A/B/C
What happens on a loss of 1D 4kv?
LO-P-6 starts and does NOT supply TB bearing oil. LO-P-6 cannot overcome LO-P-11 discharge pressure
