What is Complimentary/ Alternative called (CAM)?
diverse group of Medical and Health care systems practices and products that are not presently considered part of conventional (alopathec)medicine.
What is Integrative medicine?
medicine has some sort of clinical evidence and it is integrated with conventional medicine than it is called integrative medicine.
Western view about alternative medicine
Marcia Angell feels that there should not be 2 types of medicine. Anything works they are one called medicine.
World health organisation definition says?
Anything works in human body to prevent diagnose or treat patient based on their cultural believes and theories and believes called alternative medicine.
What is the proportion of people use cam in developing countries according to WHO?
70-80%
Why people do use CAM?
Easy accessibility
Cheaper
Less or no side effects
They are adhering with culture
This type of medicine is more natural
Some people can use Alternative meds whey they think antibiotics are not working anymore.
GPs provide less time, but Alternate doctors more
Comparison between CAM (Complementary and alternative) vs OM (Orthodox medicine)?
CAM Give more time to patient History taking not expensive OM Give less time to patient History taking expensive
Where we can get complementary and alternative medicine?
Online, Pharmacies, health food shop, independent practitioner.
What is the One problem is during communication with CAM users is by their physician?
People do not often share or disclose their CAM use to their physician
Why? Research shows following patients’ response
My doctor never asked me that
And it was not important for my doctor to know
And My doctor will not understand
And my doctor disapproves.
So, what does it relate to be a pharmacist?
So, as a pharmacist I need to know about the basics of CAM and relate them while treat the patient
We need to know which product they are using
We need to identify the risk and benefits for the use of our patient
Some medicine has side effect with CAM, or some CAM has same effect with conventional medicine which can be lethal for patient.
For example, warfarin has blood thinning effect, but ginger and garlic also have blood thinning effect.
What is Rongoa?
Maori has holistic approach to their health care system. It includes plant-based remedies, physical therapies, and spiritual healing which is known as Rongoa.
There are three main principals of Homoeopathic medicine?
- Homeopath at first increase than slowly start decreasing
- Dr therapeutic effects or potency based on their dilation effect. Higher the dilation higher the efficacy.
