Highest burden in West Africa
2 different clades:
-West Africa [Clade 2]
-Central Africa [Clade 1]
Mpox - transmission
Person-to-person:
-Direct contact with infectious rash, scabs
-Respiratory secretions during prolonged face-to-face contact
-Transplacental
Mpox - diagnosis
Detection of viral DNA by PCR
-Specimen taken from rash
Mpox - clinical manifestations
IP - usually 7-14 days [range 5-21 days]
Invasion period: 0-5 days
Fever, headache, fatigue, lymphadenopathy
1-2 days into fever - skin eruption
Mpox - treatment
Supportive care, most recover without complication
Tecovirimat [TPOXX]:
-Oral or IV course 14 days
Mpox - vaccines
Jynneos/Imvamune/Imvanex [vaccine of choice]
-Live, non-replicating vaccinia virus
-2 doses, 4 weeks apart
-Contraindications: mpox symptoms, egg allergy, ciprofloxacin or gentamicin allergy

CI: immune deficiency, cardiac disease, atopic dermatitis
