Movements at Synovial Joints Flashcards
Flexion
Movement that decreases a joint angle
Extension
Movement that increases a joint angle; returns body to zero position
Hyperextension
Extreme extension
Lateral Flexion
Occurs when trunk of the body moves laterally in coronal plane
Abduction
Movement in frontal plane away from the midline
Adduction
Movement in frontal plane toward midline
Circumduction
Scribing a cone
Rotation
Pivoting motion
Lateral Rotation
Turns anterior surface of humerus or femur laterally
Medial Rotation
Turns anterior surface of humerus or femur medially
Pronation
Medial rotation of forearm so palm of hand faces posteriorly or inferiorly
Supination
Lateral rotation of forearm so palm faces anteriorly or superiorly
Elevation
Raises body part vertically in frontal plane
Depression
Lowers body part vertically in frontal plane
Plantar Flexion
Movement at ankle joint so toes point inferiorly
