Q

Hypertonic (plasmolyzed)

A

Solution that has a higher concentration that the solution on the other side of the semi permeable membrane (very concentrated) placed in water and a lot of sugar. Water exits by osmosis causing cell to shrink

Q

Hypotonic (turgid)

A

Solution that has a lower concentration than the solution on the other side of the semi-permeable membrane (placed in distilled water. Water enters cell by osmosis , vacuole expands bringing out turgor pressure.

Q

Isotonic (flaccid)

A

Coccentrations on either side of the semi permeable membrane are equal (no osmosis, placed in water and sugar)

Q

Hypotonic in animal cells

A

Cell will

Swell up and burst because the cell has no cell wall (haemolyzed)

Q

What is turgor pressure?

A

Water enters the vacuole of the plant cell, causing it to expand, the cell wall exerts an equal and opposite pressure causing what is known as turgor pressure

Q

Osmoregulation to amoeba

A

It is a contractile vacuole
Water enters by osmosis is collected by contractile vacuole and emptied by the fusion of the vacuole with the cell membrane to remove excess water
