7 Vital Functions Flashcards
What is holozoic nutrition? Give the 5 stages.
Feeding in an animal-like fashion.
- Intake of food into the body - indigestion
- Food chemically broken down -digestion
- Digested food passed on by the body -absorption
- Digested food used by the body -assimilation
- Removal of undigested food -egestion
A parasite
Organism living in/on another organism to obtain its food. Host is always suffering
Endoparasites live in host - tapeworms, liverfluke
Exoparasites- live on host - fleas, mosquitos
Don’t digest/egest because they only take in digested food
Saprophytes
Feeds on dead organic matter causing them to decay (fungi)
- Fungus settles on food first
- Fungus releases enzymes to digest food externally
- After the food is digested externally, fungus absorbs in digested food
Word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen -> co2 + water + energy
Word equation anaerobic respiration
Food -> co2+alcohol + energy
What is excretion?
Removal of waste products of metabolism
Sweating urinating
Sexual VS Asexual reproduction
Sexual:
- involves sex (gender)
- 2 partners required
- Sex cells produced
- Fertilisation will occur when male and female sex cells fuse. Forming a ZYGOTE
- Variety is ensured
- Evolution will occur (humans, apple trees)
Asexual:
- No sex
- 1 individual required
- No sex cells produced
- No fertilisation
- Offspring exactly identical to parent - clone
- No evolution occurs because offspring doesn’t vary (amoeba)
Locomotion
Movement of whole body
Differences between plants & animals
Plants:
- keep growing throughout life
- Growth occurs in certain regions only
Animals
- Stop growing after certain age (male= 21 female =18)
- Growth occurs in all regions & renewal of cells occurs throughout life
