Movement of Joints Flashcards
Flexion
Decreases the angle of a joint
Extension
Increases the angle of a joint
Example of flexion/extension?
The elbow bending/straightening
Abduction
Moves a part of the body away from the midline
Adduction
Moves part of the body towards the midline
Example of abduction/adduction?
Moving the leg away / towards another
Elevation
Moves a bone vertically upwards
Depression
Moves a bone vertically downwards
Example of elevation / depression?
Lifting / lowering the scapula
Protraction
Moves a joint horizontally forwards
Retraction
Moves a joint horizontally backwards
Example of protraction/retraction?
Moving the scapula forwards/backwards
Lateral excursion
Moves the mandible laterally
Medial excursion
Moves the mandible medially
Circumduction
Moves a part of the body so that it follows a circular part. This movement is created by a combination of flexion, extension, adduction & abduction.
Rotation
Moves a bone around its axis
Example of rotation?
Rotating the trunk
Lateral rotation
Turns a bone laterally on its longitudinal axis
Medial rotation
Turns a bone medially on its longitudinal axis
Example of lateral/medial rotation?
Lateral/medial rotation of the forearm
Supination
Rotates the forearm and hand, and the foot and ankle upwards
Pronation
Rotates the forearm and hand, and the foot and ankle, downwards
Opposition
Moves the thumb towards the fingertips
Reposition
Moves the thumb away from the fingertips
Dorsiflexion
Flexes the ankle joint
Plantar flexion
Extends the ankle joint
Inversion
Lifts the medial side of the foot
Eversion
Lifts the lateral side of the foot
