Cells Flashcards
What are the principal parts of a cell? (3)
Plasma membrane, Nucleus, Cytoplasm
What is the plasma membrane composed of?
Proteins and lipids
What is the function of the plasma membrane?
To protect cellular contents, and makes contact with the other cells
What is cytoplasm?
Cellular contents between plasma membrane and nucleus – contains cytosol and organelles
What is the function of cytoplasm?
Houses intracellular activities (except those that happen in nucleus)
What is the nucleus?
A nuclear envelope with pores, nucleoli, and chromosomes.
What is the function of the nuclear pores?
Control the movement of substances between nucleus and cytoplasm
What is the function of the nucleoli?
Producing ribosomes
What are the functions of chromosomes?
Consist of genes that control cellular structure and direct cellular functions
What is a somatic cell?
Any cell of the body.
What is a germ cell?
A gamete (sperm or oocyte)
What is somatic cell division?
Mitosis
What is reproductive cell division?
Meiosis
