Movement Into and out of cells | 3 Flashcards
Diffusion
Net movement of particles along the concentration gradient from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration as a result of random movement
Factors of diffusion
Surface area
Temperature
Concentration gradient
Distance
Osmosis
Diffusion of water through a partially permeable membrane , from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution
From a region of high water potential to low water potential
Turgor pressure / turgid
When water is pressing onto the outside of a cell
Plasmolysis
When there is too little water in the cell , cell membrane peels from the cell wall
how do plants get supported because of osmosis
It maintains the pressure of water in plant cells to support the plant
Active transport
Involves the movment of substances against their concentration gradient
Usage of energy from respiration
What do protien carrier molecules do
They transport substances across the membrane during active transport
Why is the upkeep of water potential important
Without it , cells could die due to becoming flaccid and animal cell could be in danger of bursting because of excess turgor pressure and no cell wall
