Enzymes

A

Proteins that function as biological catalysts

Important in organisms as they maintain a reaction speed needed to sustain life

Q

Explain step by step enzymes reaction

A

Enzyme works on a substance called the substrate , combining with it from its active site

A temporary enzyme substrate complex is formed

after which the product is formed and released

The enzyme and the substrate have complementary shapes so they are very specific in the reactions they catalyse

Q

Enzymes denaturing

A

When the enzymes shape is permanently changed due to excess heat / PH so it can no longer combine with its substrate

enzymes in stomach work well in a ph of 2
most enzymes work well in ph of 7

Q

Substrate specificity

A

The ability of an enzyme to catalyse only a specific reaction or set of reactions which have substrates complementary to the active site of the enzyme.

Q

Why does higher temps until optimum temp / PH give a faster enzyme rate

A

For the enzyme to catalyse the substrate and speed up its reaction , it needs to collide with it , and because of the highted kinetic energy , the amount of collisions increase , giving more oppurtunites to catalyse the substrate
