movement analysis Flashcards
5 reasons coaches analyse performance
Determine what the athlete is doing right/wrong
Determine the key aspects of performance that need attention
Determine what training activities are needed to rectify the faults
Track the athletes progress
Improve future performance
3 environments for analysing performance
Labratory testing
Field testing
Competition testing
Lab testing
So various factors can be varied or manipulated
Field testing
An athletes performance can be tested in normal training conditions
Competition testing
An athlete is analysed while performance during competition
2 methods of movement analysis
Quantitative analysis
Qualitative analysis
Quantitative anaylsis
Uses numbers eg skin folds times and distances. It is objective based on fact
Qualitative analysis
Description/analysis of movement without using number eg good, short, heavy
It is subjective, based on opinion of the observer
Knudsen Morrison model of qualitative analysis
The knudsen morrison is a 5 stage process and must be done in a certain order. Each stage has a specific goal
5 stages of knudsen model
Preparation stage Observation stage Evaluation stage Intervention Stage Re-observation stage
Preparation phase
Coach develops pre requisite knowledge base about the skill… coach must know techincal factors that will affect performance
How can the coach develop a knowledge base in prep phase
Follow a checklist outlining key points of technique eg prep, execution and follow through
Observation phase
Observation involves the sytematic gathering of info about the performance or movement
Things to consider during observation phase
What is the best angle to observe from
How close/far away
Video or direct observation
Evaluation Phase
Identify the strengths and weaknesses or the performer. Need to prioritize in order of importance for correction and identify methods which can be used to improve performance
3 things to consider during eval phase
Critical weaknesses- inhibit performance- need imediate attention
Large changes that need more time could be done in off season
Technical flaws may not always need addressing
Intervention Phase
Involves providing feedback and corrections to the performer, usually under practice conditions, to improve performance
What does the coach do in the intervention phase
Coach explains what errors are occurring and why and describes what drills/activities should be done to rectify these identified problems.
3 purposes of feedback
Motivation
To change performance
To reinforce learning
2 types of feedback
External and internal
internal feedback
information the performer receives from within their body about how the skill felt
external feedback
information received from outside the body and is received via the sensory system – usually seen, felt, heard
2 types of external feedback
intrinsic which is detecting information from their own action or augmented which is additional feedback usually provided by the coach
4 types of cues in augmented feedback
Visual
Verbal
Proprioceptive
Written
Visual
Allow the learner to see what the movement looks like (demonstration, 3 or 4 key points, video feedback)
Verbal
Single words or short phrases that help the performer focus on a single aspect that can assist performance. E.g. “follow through”.
Proprioceptive
The coach physically moves/adjusts the performer so they are aware of how the movement should feel
Written
The coach provides written feedback to the performer about the strength and weaknesses of his performance and ways to improve future performance.
Reobservation phase
Observe the performe in a similar context to the initial observation to see if changes implemented have improved performance
2 examples of analysis
Video and checklist
4 steps for analysis technique using video
- Video gameplay/training session
- review/analyse film and compare to ideal performance
- Give feedback
- implement strategy for correction
Why use video feedback 4 reasons
- can be slowed and paused to show s+w
- used to track improvement
- Provides instant visual feedback
Checklists
Checklists is a written record of performance in relation to a predetermined criteria can be used to determine the technical and tactical ability of performers
4 steps of checklist
Checklist is made identifying key criteria of performance
Athlete does a performance and information is recorded on a checklist by observer
Identify strength and weaknesses and then plan for improvement
observe improvement after feedback
5 reasons checklists and video are used
improve understanding
provide instant feedback
be more involved in correcting their own performance
determine the impact of mental or physical performance
engage in reflective learning.
