Flexion
The angle at the joint gets smaller (e.g bicep curl)
Extension
The angle at the joint gets larger (e.g shot put throw)
Abduction
Movement away from the body’s mid line (e.g cartwheel)
Adduction
Movement towards the body’s mid line (e.g end of cartwheel)
Plantarflexion
Pointing toes (e.g jumping in high jump)
Dorsiflexion
Moving your toes towards your shin (e.g landing in long jump)
Rotation
movement around a joint (movement around the arms during swimming)
Prime mover
The muscle that contracts.
Antagonist
The muscle that relaxes.
Insertion
The end of the muscle that is attached to the fixed bone.
Origin
The end of the muscle that is attached to the bone that moves.
Isometric muscle contraction
No movement occurs, muscles are working to
stabilise a joint therefore it stays the same length.
Isotonic muscle contractions
When the muscle changes its length, it will either be concentric or eccentric
concentric muscle contractions
when the muscles shortens
Essentric muscle contractions
when the muscle gradually lengthens and returns to its normal shape
