Motor Skills Flashcards
Types of motor skills
gross motor skills - large movements,
fine motor skills - small movements
The theoretical foundation of Milo’s coaching method for movement
- Halsband’s three phases of motor learning.
- Implicit and externally-focused coaching improves sports performance.
- Internal locus of control and self-efficacy.
Fundamental motor skills
Fundamental motor skills are the basic movement skills needed to move.
motor engram
A motor engram is a memorized motor pattern used to perform a movement or skill.
3 phases of motor learning
Initial, Intermediate, Advanced.
Throughout the phases, movements become more consistent, output more controlled, while less directed attention is required.
Each phase requires a targeted approach from the trainer to emphasize the right things.
Internal vs external focus
An internal focus is a focus on the sub-movements of the total body movement.
An external focus is on the effect of the movement on the environment or the end goal.
Wulff’s research shows that an external focus improves output across all types of performance.
Implicit vs explicit
Explicit is a way of acquiring or sharing knowledge without directly stating what is happening.
Implicit is very detailed and precise.
Studies show that an explicit sit form of learning works better for acquiring and improving movements.
Internal vs external locus of control
An external locus of control refers to the belief that the outcome is not influenced by one’s own behavior.
An internal locus of control refers to the belief that we have significant or complete influence over an outcome.
Self-efficacy
Self-efficacy is a person’s confidence in their ability to successfully influence their environment, for example, by completing a task or solving a problem.
