refers to the development of child’s bones, muscles and ability to move around and manipulate their environment

Reflexes - new-born
- not much control over own body
- can’t pick up head
- have built-in reflexes
permanent reflexes
breathing, blinking, pupillary, swallowing
Rooting
- stroke cheek near corner of the mouth
- head will turn to face the stimulus
- will make sucking motions
- helps find the nipple
Morro (startle reflex)
- present from birth until 4/6 months
- reaction to sudden loss of support
Asymmetric tonic neck relfex
- as the head is turned, the arm and leg on the same side extend, while the opposite limbs bend
Babinski
stroke the side of the foot, big toe moves forward
Proximal distal development
- growing centre-outward
- proceeds from areas close to the spine to areas away from the spine
- motor generic functions of the limbs develop before the specific or fine motor skills
Gross motor milestones in 1st year
posture - supine/pull up to sitting
standing and walking
