Define Performance Related Pay
A motivational strategy where the remuneration of an employee is linked to their performance within the business
Advantage of PRP
Incentive for an employee to work harder and therefore be more productive within the business
Disadvantage of PRP
Creates competition and resent between employees which can therefore create a negative corporate culture
Define Career Advancement
A motivational strategy where an employee is given an opportunity to develop their skills and take on a new position within the business
Advantage of career advancement
Gives the employee a feeling of progression and therefore can motivate them to be more productive in the business
Disadvantage of career advancement
It is difficult to provide career advancement for multiple employees which can cause resentment and a decrease in morale for other employees
Define Investment in training
A motivational strategy where an employee is given an opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge to make them more efficient and effective in their role
Advantage of investing in training
Employee feels more valued within the business and therefore is more likely to be motivated to work harder
Disadvantage of investing in training
It is expensive to conduct training and can cause a decrease in profit as there is no guarantee the employee is more productive
Define Support
A motivational strategy where a manager meets with an employee to verbally instil confidence and belief in the employee to overcome problems
Advantage support
Employee feels valued and cared for by the business and is therefore more likely to be more productive
Disadvantage support
It can be expensive and time consuming for the HR manager to be doing and therefore can decrease their own productivity in their other role
Define Sanction
A motivational strategy where an employee receives a penalty for poor performance
Advantage sanction
It is a powerful motivator for employees motivated by fear and therefore can cause a rapid change in performance
Disadvantage sanction
It can cause resentment and conflict if employees become too afraid of the manager
