drive to perform well to gain external rewards such as trophy or praise

-feel motivated to work harder and earn reward, trophy can only be won once a year so good source of motivation

-become too reliant on it, undermines intrinsic so place more value on what others think + if not won stop all together
-unhealthy sense of pride, performer thinks they are better than they really are
-lose focus on technique so more likely to make mistakes

drive that comes from within to give a sense of pride
pos of intrinsic
-sense of self worth increases which motivates them to train harder
-higher level of personal achievement is more likely to result in continued effort
performance goal
personal standards to be achieved, only compared to previous performance and not other performers
-focus on technique enhances performance
outcome goal
focus on the end result and winning, so compared to other performers
negative of outcome goals
-not good for beginners as its unrealistic for them to win straight away
-demotivating
-focuses solely on winning so could forget tactics and performance
-cannot control whether opposition play better
-could become overaroused and nervous so make mistakes
