Motivation
A drive to succeed
Intrinsic vs Extrinsic motives
■ Extrinsic motives:
■ attract to the activity and provide early motivation.
■ If used too much may undermine value of the activity and therefore Intrinsic motivation, players compete just for the reward.
■ Extrinsic rewards may create pressure on players to achieve and if they don’t get the reward, motivation can be lost. The same pressure may also promote cheating
■ Intrinsic motives:
■ Intrinsic rewards are more effective, stronger and long lasting, they give more satisfaction and pride and a sense of control.
What methods could be used by coaches to motivate performers
■ Rewards, praise and positive reinforcement ■ Make the task fun/enjoyable ■ Make sure the performer can succeed ■ Point out the benefits of exercise ■ Negative reinforcement (for experts) ■ Set attainable goals ■ Point out role models ■ Break the task down ■ Attribute success internally
