Intrinsic motivation

A

Intrinsic motivation in sport refers to internal motivations that result from the process of participation in sport. Intrinsic motivation would include;
Playing for enjoyment
Social affiliation
Self – challenge
Thrill seeking

Extrinsic motivation

A

Extrinsic motivation refers to external motivations that result from participation in sport eg: money, winning, fame and awards. eg a player coming out of contract

A person with high achievement motivation has

A

A desire to do well regardless of circumstances
A desire to reach self – set standards
A desire to reach or even exceed the expectations of others
A willingness to persist in behaviours that lead to improvement even if it means risking failure in the process.
A low fear of failure.
An ability to lift performance levels as task difficulty increases.

Ways to improve motivation

A
  1. Consider participant and situational factors. Why are players involved – to be with friends? - to keep fit?
  2. Make players feel valued (be a part of the team)
  3. Give players roles (on field - line leader
  4. Team leaders need to be enthusiastic
  5. Set team and individual goals for the team
