Circulatory system Flashcards
Functions of the circulatory system
- Circulate blood to body
- Transport O2, water and nutrients to cells in the blood
- Transport CO2 and wastes away from the cells
- Maintain body temperature
- White blood cells fight infection
Hyperthermia
If the body becomes too hot, the cardiovascular system directs blood flow to the skin so heat is lost to the environment by sweating.
The skin blood vessels will vasodilate (increase diameter) so there is more blood flow to the skin.
Hypothermia
If the body becomes too cold and heat needs to be retained, blood flow to the skin is restricted.
Blood vessels will vasoconstrict (contract and reduce in diameter) to decrease the flow of blood to the skin thereby decreasing heat loss.
Blood vesels
ARTERIES: Carry blood away from the heart
VEINS: Carry blood towards the heart
CAPILLARIES: Allow the passing of oxygen to tissues and removal of carbon dioxide
Blood
Adult human body contains between 5-7L of blood
Transport of nutrients and waste products
Regulation of body’s temperature
Protection of the body
components of blood
plasma- (water, nutrients and blood proteins)
Approximately 55% of total blood volume
White Blood Cells- Approximately <1% of total blood volume
Red Blood Cells- Approximately 45% of total blood volume
Cardiac contraction
The process of heart muscle contraction consists of two phases. They are Systole and Diastole
