Motivation Flashcards
What is motivation?
The drive to succeed, or the want to achieve something
What are the two main categories of motivation?
Intrinsic motivation.
Extrinsic motivation.
What is intrinsic motivation?
The drive that comes from within the performer.
I need to achieve something may well have the award of a feeling of pride self-satisfaction of general treatment.
Performance driven to achieve something for the feeling it brings them.
what is extrinsic motivation?
The drive experienced by a performer when striving to achieve a reward.
The external reward is provided by an outside source or person.
what kind of rewards are there?
Tangible rewards – such as certificates, trophies, medals.
Intangible awards – such as praise of feedback from others or applause from the crowd.
disadvantages of extrinsic motivation
Performance can become too reliant on extrinsic motivation– the only played for the reward/prize/money
The overuse of extrinsic can undermine the strength of intrinsic – if too many rewards are on offer, it may cause performance to forget why they’re playing in the first place
