what are the two types of goals which can be considered by performance/coaches?
Performance goals.
Outcome goals.
what is a performance goal?
The individual compares themselves against what they have already done or suggest what they are going to do – it does not involve the performer comparing themselves to other performers
example of a performance goal
For a 100 meter runner:
To make a better start the achieved in the last race
what are outcome goals?
They are used to judge the end result.
They usually involve comparison with other competitors.
It’s the outcome of that matters.
Examples of outcome goals
A football player:
May wish to win the match.
May wish to score 2 goals.
What should beginners use?
outcome goals as failure could demotivate them
What should elite athletes use?
outcome goals, they can increase their desire to succeed even more
what is SMART target setting?
Specific – specific to the demands of the sport/muscles used/movements involved
Measurable – it must be possible to measure whether it has been achieved
Accepted – it must be accepted/agreed by the performer and the performers coach
Realistic – it must action will be possible to complete goal; the person is physically capable
Time bound – it must be set over a fixed period of time
