Feedback Flashcards
how is feedback received?
intrinsic– from within
extrinsic– from others/from results
what are the types of feedback?
Positive/negative
Knowledge of results/knowledge of performance
what is positive feedback?
Positive feedback is used to inform the athlete what was correct about the movement.
Performers need to know if a movement is correct as this provides the reference point future attempts at the movement.
It’s essential in motivating athletes.
What is negative feedback
Negative feedback is used to inform the athlete what was incorrect about the movement.
Negative feedback must include information on the action is required by the performer to achieve the correct movement.
What is a knowledge of results?
knowledge of results focuses on how successful you have been in achieving what you set out to do.
Is generally factual and given to by coach or teacher, although you may be able to see it for yourself.
Examples: whether you scored or not with a free throw in basketball.
What score you recorded in golf
What is knowledge of performance?
knowledge of performance provides more detail about how well you did, irrespective of the result.
It may relate to technique used or specific aspects of the movement you produced.
It deals with the quality of the performance, not the result.
Examples: the technique used when performing a free throw- ‘excellent elbow extension !’
What is extrinsic feedback?
extrinsic feedback as information received about the performance, which comes from outside of the performer.
For example: a coach or teacher
Extrinsic feedback may also come from fellow performers, or the spectators, and is generally given verbally, or it could be given on a scorecard.
How is extrinsic feedback, important for beginners?
Beginners often struggle to understand, or interpret that success of their movement, so they rely heavily on feedback from others
What does intrinsic feedback?
intrinsic feedback is information which is received from within the performer.
For example: how something feels, information from the senses or muscles.
As performance progress and become elite, they develop the ability to interpret such sensory information. They can feel if a skill has been performed well.
For example: an elite golfer will know, from the feel of the swing, if it was a good shot
