What is the definition of motivation?
“The direction and intensity of one’s efforts.” (Sage 1977)
what is amotivation?
A complete lack of motivation. (Lack of any intention to take part in the sport.)
give examples of intrinsic factors?
Enjoyment, pleasure, an opportunity to learn new things, wanting to fufill their potential.
Examples of extrinsic factors?
Trophies, Approval from others, acceptance, compliments, scholarships. (Materialistic things.)
Why might somebody be amotivated?
Because they dislike/cannot cope with the pressure. They don’t want to risk being negatively viewed.
How would you increase intrinsic motivation?
Setting achievable goals, participating in sports you enjoy, not just to win.
What is the social learning theory?
The idea that you learn different ways to act/behave from your social circle
What is Trait Theory?
The idea that you have traits that you are ‘born with.’ And no matter what environment you’re, in those traits decide how you act.
Influence of family and peers?
The athletes family and peers can have a massive effect on the athletes motivation
How can the environment influence an athletes motivation?
if the environment is clean, pleasing to the eye and up to date, athletes will want to go there more often, leading to more training and effort.
What are the signs of over motivation?
Overtraining, becoming irritable/guilty while not training,
What are the negative effects of over motivation?
Overconfidence, body doesn’t have time to recover, burn out, social withdrawals
What are the positive effects of motivation?
Increased confidence, increased chance of success
What are the dictating factor of over motivation?
Your social circle, enjoyment of the sport
