Motion Dynamics lecture Flashcards
What are the three characteristics of motion?
Direction (flexion, extension, etc)
Range (degrees)
Quality (smooth, ratcheting, etc)
What are the characteristics of the end feel of the range of motion?
Elastic- ike a rubber band Abrupt- osteoarthritis or hinge joint Hard- Somatic dysfunction Empty- stops due to guarding Crisp- involuntary muscle guarding
Define flexibility
Range of motion in a joint or a group of joints
OR
the ability to move joints effectively through a complete ROM
Define stiffness
Reduced ROM of a joint or a group of joints
What is coupled motion
consistent association of a motion along or about one axis, with another motion about another axis
Principle motion cannot be produced without the associated motion as well
(picking a pencil off the floor, you need flexion, rotation, and side bending
Which portion of the spine displays the greatest motion?
Cervical spine
What is scurvy?
Vitamin C deficiency
What is osteogenesis imperfecta?
Blue sclera of the eyes
Multiple fractures due to brittle bones
What is Ehler-Danlos syndrome?
Collagen dysfunction
Joint hyper mobility
Stretchy skin
Diagnosed by 4/9 hyper mobility based in the Breighton criteria
What is Alport syndrome?
Deafness and kidney dysfunction
What is Menkes disease?
Copper deficiency that causes kinky hair, growth failure, deterioration of nervous system
What is the Breighton criteria?
Test for hyper mobility; divided into major and minor criteria
How do you diagnose Ehler Danlos syndrome based on the Brieghton criteria?
Any one of the following
2 major criteria
1 major plus two minor
4 minor criteria
2 minor criteria and affected first degree relative in family hx
