What are the Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development.
Level 1 - Pre-Conventional
* Stage 1( Punishment —Obedience Orientation) *Stage 2 (Instrumental Relativist Orientation)
Level 2—Conventional
* Stage 3(Good Boy - Nice Girl Orientation) * Stage 4 (Law and Order Orientation)
Level 3— Post Conventional
- Stage 5 ( Social Contract Orientation)
- Stage 6 ( Universal Ethical Principle Orientation)
People at this stage do not really understand the conventions/ rules of a society.
Level 1- Pre-Conventional Stage (Birth-9 years)
-Concern about the consequences/ Punishment.
- consequences of acts determine whether they’re good or bad.
Stage 1: Punishment - Obedience Orientation
Concerns with the mutual benefit. Obeying rules and exchanging favors are judged in terms of the benefit to the individual.
Stage 2: Instrumental Relativist Orientation
Stages under Level 1: Pre-Conventional (Birth- 9 years old)

People at this stage conform to the conventions/ rules of a society.
Level 2: Conventional (10-13 years old)
Ethical decisions are based on concern for the opinions of others. “ Social Approval”.
Stage 3: Good Boy - Nice Girl
Right behavior consists in doing one’s duty, showing respect for authority and maintaining the given social order for its own sake.
Stage 4: Law and Order Orientation
The moral principles that underlie the conventions of a society are understood.
Level 3: Post Conventional (13 + years)
Rules and laws represent agreements among people about behavior that benefits society. Rules can be changed when they no longer meet society’s needs.
Stage 5: Social Order/ Social Contract
Right is defined by the decision of conscience in accord with self-chosen ethical principles appealing to logical comprehensiveness, universality and consistency.
