Definition of mood.
Mood is the pervasive emotional state that influences or is influenced by our experiences.
- Mood fluctuates from happiness to sadness.
- Mood is influenced by personality and culture.

Define BPD type I.
Bipolar type I disorder is a mood disorder characterized by manic and depressive episodes.

What is the diagnostic criteria of Bipolar Type I? Manic Episode
Manic Episode
A. Distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated and expansive mood lasting greater than 1 week and is present most of the day and nearly every day.
B. 3 or more of these symptoms
- Inflated self esteem/grandiosity
- Decreased need for sleep
- talkative more than usual
- flight of ideas
- distractability
- excess involvement in pleasurable activities which have a high potential for painful consequences
- episode not attributed to any mental/medical condition/ substance use
What is the diagnostic criteria of Bipolar Type I? Depressive Episode
. 5 or more of the following symptoms during the same 2-week
period with at least one of the symptoms
being either (1) depressed mood or (2) loss of interest or pleasure which are not attributed to another medical condition/ substance of abuse.
- Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day. Or an irritable mood in children and adolescents.
- Diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day
- Significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain or decreased appetite.
- Insomnia or hyper-somnia nearly every day.
- Psycho-motor agitation or retardation nearly every day.
- Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day.
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt.
- Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day.
- Recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide.
C. The episode is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance or another
medical condition.
