Major Depressive Episode
A. 5 or more of the following in the same 2 week period, and one of them has to be depressed mood or anhedonia
- Mood
- Suicide
- Interest
- Guilt
- Energy
- Cognition
- Appetite
- Psychomotor
- Sleep
B. Affects function and is a change in function from baseline
C. Not due to effects of a substance or general medical condition
Manic Episode
A. Abnormally elevated or irritable mood, and increase in goal-directed activity or increased energy, and lasting at least one week (unless hospitalized)
B. 3 or more of the following that are a noticeable change in normal behaviour
- Distractability
- Insomnia
- Grandiosity
- Flight of ideas
- Activity - increased or more reckless
- Sexual
- Talkative
C. Severe impairment in functioning or hospital admission or psychotic features
D. Not due to effect of a substance or GMC
Hypomanic Episode
A. A and B from manic episode, but the duration need only be 4 days
B. Does not impair function and no hospitalization and no psychosis
C. Not due to effects of substance
Major Depressive Disorder
A. One or more major depressive episodes
B. No manic or hypomanic episodes
Persistent Depressive Disorder
A. Low mood and 2 or more of:
- Appetite change
- Sleep change
- Low energy
- Low self esteem
- Poor concentration
- Hopelessness
B. Not symptom free for more than 2 months in a 2 year period
C. No manic or hypomanic episodes
D. Not better for accounted by another condition
Bipolar I Disorder
A. One manic episode
B. Not due to psychotic disorder
Bipolar II Disorder
A. One hypomanic Episode and one MDE
B. Never had a manic episode
Cyclothymia
A. Numerous periods of subthreshold hypomanic and dysthymic episodes
B. No symptom free for longer than 2 months in 2 years
C. No MDE/mania/hypomanic
D. Functional impairment
E. Not better accounted for by another condition
Substance-Induced Mood Disorder
A. Mood disturbances or anhedonia
B. Evidence of:
- During/soon after use/withdrawal
- The involved substance is capable of causing the symptoms from A
C. Not better accounted for by another condition
D. Does not occur exclusively during a delirium
E. Impairment in functioning
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
A. In the majority of menstrual cycles, 5 symptoms must be present before menses, improve following menses, and be absent post menses
B. One of
- Affective lability
- Irritability/anger/interpersonal conflict s
- Depressed mood/hopelessness
- Anxiety/tension
C. One of
- Decreases interest
- Concentration difficulty
- Lethargy
- Appetite
- Sleep
- Overwhelmed/out of control
- Psychical symptoms - breast tenderness, joint/muscle pain, bloating, weight gain
D. Functional impairment
E. Not exacerbation of another Disorder
F. Not better accounted for by another condition
