What is a mood disorder?
A sustained, distressing mood state which alters functioning and causes clinically significant impairment
What is a manic episode?
- Distinct period of at least one week of a persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood
- less sleep, pressured speech, fight of ideas, increased goal directed activity, etc.
**causes marked impairment, including psychotic symptoms = hospital or prison
What is a hypomanic episode?
-same as manic episode, but not severe enough to send you to hospital or prison, and only needs to be 4 consecutive days

What is Bipolar I disorder?
- ONLY REQUIRES 1 episode of mania
* rapid cycling = more than 4 episodes of a mood disturbance in 1 year
What is bipolar disorder called in children meow?
Disruptive mood regulation disorder
When do most manic episodes of Bipolar I disorder occur?
-before or after a major depressive episode
What greatly increases your risk of Bipolar I disorder?
- Substance use disorders
- Anxiety disorders
- first degree relative with BP I
What is Bipolar II disorder?
- must have a history of BOTH a hypomanic episode and a major depressive episode
- hypomanic episodes often do not present for treatment since functioning is not impaired
What is rapid cycling?
more than 4 episodes of a mood disturbance in 1 year
Is rapid cycling more common in Bipolar I or II disorder?
Bipolar II
What is a mixed episode?
The criteria for both a manic episode and a major depressive episode are present for one week
What NT is most involved in cycling mood disorders?
- Dopamine
