Monsoon Climate - Case Study Flashcards
Where does the monsoon climate occur
Much of India and Bangladesh
What do monsoons do to the winds
The winds will be involved in a seasonal reversal.
Characteristics of the winds
Very dry, and most of the rainfall is concentrated in the state of Tamil Nadu
Whilst most of the rainfall is concentrated in Tamil Nadu what happens to the rest of India
Experiences a winter drought
What happens in summer to cause the reversal of the winds
The land in and around the desert will rapidly heat up creating low pressure
What happens as a result of the low pressure
It will cause the winds to reverse as it draws in more heat and moist air
What does the Monsoon rain cause
Flooding to many towns and cities along the west coast
Where do the rice seedlings grow and where are they then moved to
They will be grown in nurseries until the summer monsoon rain begins, and then they will be brought out to flooded fields (10cm deep water)
What can a good monsoon support
People in rural areas and rapidly-growing cities
In a good monsoon season what has it allowed india to become
A leading exporter of both rice and wheat - The economy gains
What could result from a weak monsoon
Crop Failure - negatively affecting the economy due to the lower production
As a result of crop failure what could this mean
Rising Prices - Less crops available
Fewer Exports
Rising Debts for farmers which could cause higher suicide rates
Why is climate change affecting the monsoon climate
It is affecting its predictability as there have been more fluctuations to the timing and the amount of rainfall.
Why is climate change affecting farmers
Due to the uncertainty of when the monsoon season will begin, it makes it hard for them to plan when they will plant the crops
What has India done to help lessen the affects of climate change
Increase the amount of land that is irrigated
