Monsoon Climate Flashcards
Why is there a seasonal change of wet and dry periods?
The location of the ITCZ and contrasting heat capacities of solids & liquids
When is the monsoon wet season?
Summer (June to September)
Describe rainfall, winds and humidity in the monsoon wet season?
Temperatures: Very hot (26 Celsius average)
Rainfall: 2500mm ( Cumulonimbus clouds & Himalayas)
Winds: Strong ( Lots of uplift )
Humidity: Strong (Very saturated trade winds form Indian Ocean blowing on shore)
What are the influences upon the monsoon wet season?
ITCZ
STAC
Himalayas
Where is the ITCZ located in the wet season?
Northern India near the Himalayas
Despite the air being so warm, why is it unable to prevent condensation of the converging winds during the wet season?
So much moisture from the Indian Ocean
In what latitudes are the winds strongest during the wet season?
10-30
How does the STAC influence the wet season?
The descending air travels back to the ITCZ as easterly trade winds that pick up the needed moisture form the Indian Ocean
What type of rainfall does the ITCZ produce?
Convection rainfall
What type of rainfall do the Himalayas create?
Relief rainfall
When is the dry season of the monsoon climate?
November to April
Describe the temperature, rainfall, winds, humidity and TRS in the dry season of the monsoon climate?
Temperature: Decreased but still hot temperatures (15-23 Celsius)
Rainfall: Little
Winds: Weak
Humidity: Less intense because TW are offshore
TRS: More
What are the influences upon the dry season of the monsoon climate?
ITCZ
STAC
STJS
Oceans (TRS)
How does the ITCZ affect the dry monsoon season?
Winds now blow offshore so less humidity
Changes the position of the important STAC and other influences
How does the STAC affect the dry monsoon climate?
It creates an area of high pressure which creates the associated weather and can lead to droughts
