Monitoring and Evaluating Flashcards

1
Q

Explain the difference between monitoring and evaluating

A

Monitoring takes place during a PDP and evaluating takes place after. Monitoring involves reviewing your progress as you work through your PDP to see if the PDP os effective at developing your performance. If you are not improving you can make relevant changes to your PDP such as intensity or different approaches. Evaluating involved looking back at the end of your PDP to judge how effective it was at developing your weakness

Q

Why should a performer monitor and evaluate their progress?

A
  • lets them see if their PDP is working or not, based on whether or not they are achieving their short term goals. If they are improving and reaching goals it will provide them with a motivation boost to keep training hard to continue improving and trying to reach their long term goal. If they are not reaching their short term goals, can make adaptations to PDP such as changing approaches to make it more relevant to their weakness and current performance levels
  • can identify what approaches work for them and can help them improve. They can also see what approaches they enjoy and are likely to work hard at. This means they can use these approaches again in future development plans (if appropriate to weakness), if approaches not working to improve they can try different ones
  • allows them to make comparisons between initial tests and retests. This means they can measure progress and look for improvements in their performance, can set harder goals if improving to avoid hitting plateau or make appropriate adaptations to future training to make more relevant to their ability levels or performance weakness
  • should evaluate progress as helps identify new areas for development, means they can focus on new weakness allowing them to improve in another area of their performance by taking it back through the cycle of analysis

Q

Describe a training diary

A

Dairy set out in a booklet with new page for each session
At top of page was a box for the date and underneath was a table with headings for my session goal, my session plan, how I felt during the session and any adaptations for the next session
Immediately after each session I wrote exactly what I did during session in chronological order without missing anything out
I then recorded how I felt in session eg my session went okay however I found the repetition drill very tedious because it was so repetitive
I then considered if I had met my session goal
After I wrote down any adaptations for next session eg with example above I wrote I should change the repetition drill to a combination drill to practice a variety of shots
I read over info and used it to set a goal for next session

Q

Explain suitability of training diary

A
  • gave me a permanent record of sessions, compare it to future sessions to see if I am improving. Evaluate effectiveness of PDP.
  • able to complete it immediately after each session, feelings and everything I did during session were still fresh in my head, accurately inset info, able to set relevant next session goals and adaptations based on my performance levels and feelings
  • very easy to fill out, unlikely to make any mistakes, accurate information for each session, make suitable future goals and adaptations to next sessions based on my performance levels and feelings
  • method that professionals use, trusted the method was beneficial, focused on filling it out correctly and honestly, accurate data on sessions allows me to set relevant goals and adaptations to future sessions

Q

Analyse the training diary

A
  • important to fill it in immediately after session, session still fresh in your head and can re,Bert how you felt and what you did, with accurate data for sessions can set relevant goals and adaptations for future sessions
  • important you get a coach to check it over, can give you a different viewpoint as they check you opinions against how well they feel your session went, data from sessions will be more accurate due to getting input from someone who is more experienced, as a result they will know what you enjoyed in the session and what you didn’t so you can discuss this and they can also help you set relevant goals and adaptations for future sessions
  • important you keep your diary in a safe place between sessions (so not lost), this is because you can use it to compare to future sessions to look for improvements, can then evaluate effectiveness of PDP
  • important you remember to take it to training with you, if you don’t you forget important information and may end up doing wrong approaches at wrong intensities, taking with you will ensure you carry out correct sessions at correct intensities so you are more likely to improve as working at appropriate levels, may also forget things when recording how session went if you don’t have diary

Q

Evaluate the training diary

A
  • effective as acted as permanent record, compare to future tests to look for improvements, boosts motivation if improved (can also evaluate effectiveness of PDP)
  • stored in a safe place, no sheets of paper were lost and was able to easily locate any necessary information from previous sessions such as how an approach worked
  • did not always complete after training (not effective), forgetting things, info inaccurate leading to setting inappropriate goals and adaptations to future sessions
  • sometimes forget to take it to training with me so not all sessions were recorded, important monitoring information being missed out, not able to set relevant adaptations to future sessions as I will forget how different approaches worked and how I felt during sessions

Q

Describe re-testing

A

I retested the PPW
Completed this retest at the end of my 6 week PDP
Like my initial test, I played a game of badminton against the same opponent and also carried it out immediately after the game was finished, in a quiet place on my own, like before
This time I compared my scores to my initial test rather than the NORMS
Then able to identify if I had reached my long term goal or not
If I had reached my goal I then identified a new area of weakness from my retest and took it back through the cycle of analysis
If I hadn’t reached my goal then I extended my PDP for 2 weeks making any necessary adaptations before retesting again

Q

Explain suitability of re-testing

A
  • allowed me to evaluate my progress in multiple different sub-factors, can easily identify any new areas of weakness for factors and start to take them back through the cycle of analysis, continue to develop overall performance
  • easy to complete due to previous experience of using it, knew how to carry it out correctly meaning I made no mistakes, information gathered is accurate allowing me to make reliable comparisons to my initial test
  • easy to interpret the results of a PPW, because I used highlighter to clearly shade in scores, easy to compare this test to my initial test just my looking at the wheel, correctly identify if areas of weakness had improved
  • reliable as it allowed me to make comparisons against my initial data, this meant it was easy to measure the success of my PDP and let me know if I could use a similar program again to help me develop another area of weakness

Q

Analyse suitability of re-testing

A
  • important to carry out re-test in exact same conditions as the initial test, eg I carried it out in the same hall in the same quiet place on my own, with no pressure of teammates watching me, each time I could make take my time filling it without being influenced by others giving accurate data for comparison, make valid comparisons between my two sets of results
  • important to carry out re-test with a similar mindset to initial test, this is because the mood will be the same so you eliminate the risk of a different mood such as sadness changing your judgement, manner you mark yourself in is similar to initial test allowing you to make valid comparisons between the two sets of data
  • important that the game you base the test on you play against the same opponent based on equal skill level as initial test, this leads to me playing my natural game and giving an accurate impression of my typical performance, if I had played against a performer that was much better than me it would have made my results look much weaker than before so wouldn’t give me valid results to compare to my initial test

Q

Difficulties when monitoring and evaluating mental and emotional factors

A
  • all methods are qualitative, based on own opinions so may lie to impress coach or teammates
  • may not be feeling the same as when first carry out a test, may have been optimistic when first doing test but then feels down when doing retest results will differ and won’t show true representation as to if someone has improved
  • performer may rush when carrying out a questionnaire at training as they are desperate to get back out and train, can’t make valid comparisons

Q

Describe future development needs based on the evaluation of your PDP

A
  • if you discover you have not yet reached long term goal you should extend your PDP by an extra 2 weeks to give you more time to develop and improve, then re-test again
  • if you discover you have met your long term goal you can collect data on new weaknesses and take it back through the cycle of analysis

Q

explain why it is important to evaluate PDP

A
  • allows you to see if you have improved, evaluate effectiveness, find new weaknesses or extend by 2 weeks
  • identify any new weaknesses you may may, take back through cycle of analysis, develop overall performance further
  • see which approaches worked, for example if repetition drill really helped to improve your drop shot, you could use this approach again in a future PDP to develop different shots, improving overall performance
  • see if you have met your goal early, for example you wanted to improve score on IAT from 19.8 to 19.4 however you actually improved to 19 you know you have met your goals early and you can start to develop another area of performance
