Momentum (11) Flashcards
Momentum, ρ
the product of mass and velocity. The unit is kgms-1. Conserved in both elastic and inelastic collisions.
Principle of conservation of energy
states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be transferred from one type of energy to another.
Impulse
the product of force and time. Unit is Ns.
Linear momentum
the momentum of an object that moves only in one dimension.
Conservation
the total momentum of two bodies in a collision (or explosion) is the same after the collision (or explosion) as it was before.
Elastic
in elastic collisions kinetic energy is conserved.
Inelastic
in inelastic collision kinetic energy is not conserved. Some or all of the kinetic energy is transferred to heat or other types of energy.
