Molecular Biology Flashcards
Definition of molecular biology/Molecular medicine
What is Molecular Biology?
* The science of life at the molecular level.
* Study of the molecular basis of life including the biochemistry of
molecules such as DNA, RNA and proteins
* Study of the molecular processes that take place within the cells of
living organisms.
Molecular Medicine:
* The understanding of health and disease at the cellular and
molecular level
use of this information to design new approaches to,
- promote health
- prevent, diagnose, cure and treat disease
(eg. include gene therapy, DNA- based testing, vaccine design)
Precision medicine - treatments better tailored to individual patients
Components of the living cell
Water(70%)
Big molecules(23%)
Small molecules(7%)
The genetic code
The sequence of nucleotides within a gene that
determines the sequence of amino acids in a protein..
Closer look at macromolecules-DNA, RNA, proteins
How we visualise molecules
Examples of basic molecular biology techniques used to visualize DNA,RNA,proteins
Application of molecular biology techniques to understand disease e.g. cancer
