Module 9 - Qualitative Research Flashcards
How do qualitative and quantitative research differ?
Qualitative research is concerned with describing the properties/essence of an entity, while quantitative is concerned with categorising and defining the entity. Qualitative research is concerned with the meaning of data rather than it’s numerical value.
What are inductive models?
where theories develop directly out of data.
What are deductive models?
typically used in positivist quantitative research and involve theory testing.
What is ontology?
theories bout the nature of reality/being.
What is epistemology?
your theory of knowledge = how (social) phenomena can be known and how knowledge can be demonstrated.
What does Positivist mean?
There is a straightforward connection between our world and our perception of it. Direct correspondence.
Qualitative research questions tend to be…
process-oriented, locally-situated (do not attempt to generate universal laws), and focused on detailed/in-depth description or analysis of a small number of cases.
What are some of the ethical considerations of qualitative research?
the vulnerabilities of researchers, informed consent, complexities of confidentiality, use of audio, interpretations.
