Module 12 - evaluating qualitative research Flashcards
What are the four criteria for quality quantitative research, and their equivalent in qualitative research?
Quantitative - internal validity, external validity, reliability, and objectivity. Qualitative - credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability.
Objectivity is about …
distance, where the person judging stays apart fro the object being examined.
Explain Bias in qualitative research
Many qualitative approaches are based on the assumption that it is not possible to produce knowledge that is not influenced by the aims, beliefs, and actions of the researcher. The aim is to acknowledge this and be as reflexive as possible. Additionally, subjectivity is considered to exist separately from bias.
Explain Reflexivity
The ability to be both a member and commentator of culture. Involves taking a critical look inwards, and begins with understanding the importance of your own values and attitudes.
Explain member checking
Checking your analysis with your participants, this is a type of credibility check which should be built into the research design. Do the results/analysis fit with the participants’ own understanding of their experiences.
Explain triangulation
a process whereby two or more methods of data collection of sources of data are used to examine the same phenomenon. allows a richer or fuller story.
What are the three different types of skilled research practices which are dynamic and involve some critical appraisal of the research process?
Reflection, reflexivity, and phronesis.
Explain phronesis
being “street smart”.
