ideas about what constitutes appropriate masculine and feminine roles and behaviours
explain gender socialization from birth
right from birth we begin to be socialized, whether its flowers on a headband of a little girl or a blue shirt for a little boy
explain gender socialization in education
things like the hidden curriculum and boys vs girls having different behavioural expectations in schools.
explain gender devision within the media
Gender divisions are being reflected and reinforced in different forms of media. Notions of masculinity and femininity are enforced through media through commercials or other things. Women are often more sexualized than men in our media
how does gender in society relate to bodies?
how we present or bodies, efforts to shape them, and how we interpret others bodies are all accomplished socially. the way we feel about ourselves is largely affected by what others may think about our bodies
explain performing gender
everyday we perform our gender and even reconstruct and reinforce forms of gender and gender norms. Normative gender roles are rarely challenged, as it is socially constructed
Explain the gender labour force (2)
there is OCCUPATIONAL GENDER SEGREGATION. even though it is not specified, there are clearly jobs (socially) that men should do and jobs that women should do. GENDER WAGE GAP is the difference between mens and women’s earnings
what is pink ghetto?
plays into OCCUPATIONAL SEX SEGREGATION is how women are being lead into the less paying jobs. the pink ghetto is refereed to a set of jobs that are “women’s jobs”. Leading women into jobs that pay less. but what’s the value of the jobs the women are doing?
explain the sociology of housework
society benefits from the idea that women stay home and are caregivers. there I so much invisible work that women and mothers do, and none of it involves pay. Domestic labour is not being considered as labour
explain the second shift
we are caught in a stalled revolution. women are entering the workforce but it is just like women are taking on a second job. it doesn’t stop them from doing unpaid labour.
What is Heteronormativity
normalization of heterosexual relationships. the belief that sex has to be perfectly aligned with gender
explain the sexual double standard
violations of gender norms. girls can’t be a whore but guys are almost praised for it
