explain biological approach vs environmental approach
Biological approach is nature- our actions stem from our biological roots
Environmental approach is nurture- we are products of socialization (social forces and the social environment)
What do sociologists believe about social reality?
social reality is constructed by people every time they interact with others
Explain the social self
its a process of interaction, an individuals personality is shaped by and through communication with others
what is socialization? simple
the process by which people learn to become members of society. watching, learning, and observing
What are the processes of socialization? (4)

explain Meads (I and Me) (control)
mead argues that ME is going to be a control mechanism to this way that we control how we act to things. What will they think of me? This happens very quickly. Variety of different types of reactions depending on where you are. Reactions are responsive in different social contexts.
define a significant other
someone with more significant influence on you than the regular person. We begin to understand who we are based off how other people see us (influence)
what are meads developments of self? 3 stages
- preparatory stage (a baby imitating facial expressions, no consciousness in our roles)
- play stage (kids playing house and developing ideas of social roles)
- game stage (playing soccer but just running crazy)
Cooley - identity consists of 3 elements
we imagine how we must appear to others
we imagine the judgement of that appearance
we develop our self through the judgements of others
what is total institution
a setting in which people are isolated from the rest of society for a period of time and they are supervised.
explain resocialization
learning a new and different set of values, attitudes and behaviours
what does it means to be institutionalized
the more time you spend in the institution, the more you tie your sense of self to the institution
