Uses more substances for longer, unsuccessful attempts to regulate, spends more time acquiring the substance, craves the substance

Use disrupts work, school, or home, , continues despite social issues, causes reduced social, recreational, and work activities.
What are the aspects of Hazardous Use?
Continues despite hazards, continues despite worsening physical condition.
What are the aspects of Drug Action?
Tolerance is increasing, experienced withdrawal.
What are the 3 major categories of psychoactive drugs?
Stimulants, depressants, hallucinogenics.

What can depressants lead to?
Slowed neural processing
Memory disruptions
Reduced self awareness
What are barbiturates?
Tranquilizers that depress the nervous system.

Nembutal, Seconal, Amytal
What are opiates
Depress the nervous system, very addictive painkiller narcotic
What is a stimulant?
A drug that excites the nervous system, heart rate and breathing increase and pupils dilate, amphetamines are a type of stimulant
What do psychedelics fall under?
Hallucinogenics
What aspects can impact the likelihood of drug use?
Biologically: genetics, variation in neurotransmitter systems
Psychologically: lacking sense of purpose, stress, psychological disorders like depression
Socio-cultural: difficult environment, cultural acceptance of drug use, peer pressure.
