What is hypnosis?
An altered state of consciousness, including different perceptions feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Additionally it can reduce stress, unpleasant feelings and the pain of social rejection
What is cognitive neuroscience
The interdisciplinary study of the brains activity linked with mental processes
What is selective attention?
The minds ability to track specific, necessary things, ex: focus on just 40 of the 11,000,000 stimuli from one of the five senses
What is inattentional blindness?
The unintentional blindness to small stimuli that the brain may just miss
What is inattentional numbness
When distracted, it is harder to notice vibrations or other tactile sensations, pickpockets have long abused this by bumping into people
What is change blindness
Things changing in a scene after a brief visual interruption, ex: bottle of coke disappearing
What is dual processing?
The idea that language, perception, memory, thinking, and attitude all operate on two different levels, a conscious high road and an unconscious low road
What is blindsight
A condition where someone can respond to visual stimuli without seeing it
What does parallel processing do?
Process many aspects of stimuli simultaneously, Allows your mind to take care of routine business
What is sequential processing?
Processing one aspect of stimuli at a time, better for new processes and new information or solve difficult prbolems
What is consciousness?
The subjective awareness of ourselves and the environment
