What is the sensorimotor stage
Babies taking in the world through their senses and actions
What is the Preoperational stage
When children are able to represent things through words and images
What is the concrete operational stage?
When children can grasp concepts, such as conversations. They can understand jokes and understand that change in form doesn’t mean change in quantity
What is the formal operational stage?
Reasoning expands, begin being able to ponder hypothetical questions, if this, then that. While full logic and reasoning is in adolescence, they are within arms reach
What is stranger anxiety?
The fear of strangers commonly exhibited by infants
What is a critical period?
An optimal period in someone’s life where certain stimuli or experience produces normal development
What is basic trust?
A sense that the world is reliable and predictable
What does secure attachment nurture?
A thriving social life
How do socially deprived children differ?
Reduced brain development, abnormal stress responses, quadruple the rate of ADHD
What is self concept?
An understanding and assessment of self and who you are, often positive by the end of age 12
What are the 4 styles of parenting?
Authoritarian - impose rules, expect obedience
Permissive - make few demands, set few limits
Neglectful - careless or inattentive
Authoritative - demanding and responsive, control by setting rules but also allow for exceptions
