Module 8 Corrosion and Failure Analysis Objective Eight Flashcards
Non-destructive testing
used for detecting surface cracks or internal discontinuities.
ex: Liquid Penetrant (LPI) Magnetic Particle (MPI), Radiography (RT), Ultrasonic (UT)
Mechanical testing
used at/near the failure site, then the results are compared to the specifications
ex: charpy, tensile and bending tests, hardness tests
Stress Analysis
calculations may be used to confirm that the working stress is below both the UTS and the endurance limit for fatigue loading
metallographic tests
used for searching for clues regarding cracking, microstructure, morphology or distortion
Fractographic analysis
gives a detailed examination of the fracture surface. Can be done on either a macroscopic or microscopic scale to determine the fracture type, fracture origin and mechanism
