Module 8 Corrosion and Failure Analysis Objective Three Flashcards
corrosion test: labratory
exposure testing under simulated service conditions can be better controlled in laboratory testing
Corrosion test: pilot-plant
tests are made in a small-scale plant, replicating large scale operation
Corrosion test: In-service
tests are performed in a particular service. The test piece is exposed in a piece of industrial process equipment under actual service conditions
Corrosion Test: Field
the test piece is exposed to the same type of atmosphere as that occurring where the material is to be used.
Faraday’s law
mass(g)=(I(current amps) time(s)mol mass)/(95500*ions charge(n))
corrosion rate (mils per year)
mpy=534W(weight loss in mg)/(D(density in g/cm^3)A(surface area in square inch)T(time in hours)
Electrical Resistance (ER)
probe elements are a wire made of a similar material to that of the pipe/vessel being tested. the resistance in the wire is periodically measured and as the probe wire corrodes, the resistance will increase.
