What are the 10 common barriers to physical activity?
- No time to exercise
- Find it inconvenient
- Lack of self-motivation
- Find exercise unenjoyable
- Find exercise boring
- Lack of confidence in their ability to be physically active
- Fear of being injured or have been injured
- Lack self-management skills
- Lack encouragement or support
- Lack of access to space for physical activity
How can barriers be reduced?
Barriers can be reduced by learning to like exercise, learn to not be afraid etc
What is cognitive processes?
Processes involved in the acquisition, organization and use of info
What are affective processes?
Psychological processes tied to emotion and mood, they are feelings and responses, positive and negative related to emotional behaviour
What is self-regulation?
-exercise of influence over ones own motivation though processs emotional states and patterns of behaviour-failure is common and people lose control of their behaviour in a variety of circumstances
What is self efficacy?
- persons belief i their capability to successfully perform a particular task
- it can change
- ## people can possess high self ecifficacy for some tasks and low self efficacy for other tasks
What is motivation? what are the determinants?
-goal directed behaviour that indicates willingness to exert effort towards achieving goals
Determinants: intrinsic=internal drive out of own interest, extrinsic = external drive is awards, money etc
What are the determinants of self-efficacy?
Mastery: achieved when people experience success at performing at least portions of a task, breaking down tasks into steps and mastering each step
Vicarious Experience: successes or failures of others can impact self-efficacy, learn form others, “monkey see monkey doo”
What are the stages of the trans-theoretical model?
- Pre-contemplation-don’t plan on any physical activity
- Contemplation- intends to start within 6 months
- Preparation-ready to take action within 30 days
- Action-recently changed behaviour within last 6 months
- Maintenance-sustained behaviour for longer than 6 months
- Relapse- regression
