Module 7 Flashcards
What are the mineral classifications?
- Major(macro) ; 7 essential , reguired greater than 100mg pr day
- Trace(micro) : required less than 100mg day
What are the major minerals?
Calcium, Chloride, Magnesium, Phosporous, Potassium, Sodium, Sulfate
What are the roles of Calcium?
- stored in bones and teeth
- Part of bone structure
- maintain blood pressure
- hormones, digestive enzyme, neurotransmitters
What is protein remodelling?
Old protein matrix is replaced and remineralized. THis takes plase every 10 years, Insufficients calcium in remineralization results in osteoporosis.
What are the roles of Sodium?
- Fluid balance
- Acid balance
- Muscle contraction
- Nerve transmission
What is the recommendations for sodium intake?
1,500 - 2,300 mg/day
What is the dash eating plan?
- Increase consumption of vegetable and fruits
- Adequate amounts of nuts, low-fat dairy, whole grains, fish
- limit red meat and saturated fats
What are the trace minerals?
Iodine Iron Zinc Selenium Fluoride CHromium Copper Manganese Molybdenum
Where is most of the iron found?
In two proteins:
- Hemoglobin : carry oxygen from lounges to tissues.
- Myoglobin : carry and store oxygen in muscles.
What does iron do ?
Helps these proteins to hold and carry oxygen and then release it.
- metabolism
- make new cells, hormones, amino acids, neurotransmitter.
Where is iron deposited?
Liver, pancrease & heart
What are the two types of iron?
- Heme-iron: meat, fish , poultry
- nonHeme- iron
What are the minerals most often lacked?
Iron, calcium & potassium
