Module 4 Flashcards
What does protein contain?
-carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen
How many amino acids?
20
What is the structure of amino acids?
amine group-acid group-backbone-side chain
What are essential amino acids and how many?
Body can’t make or make enough, 9
What is a polypeptide?
String of 10 or more amine acids.
How is the structure of a Hemoglobin?
Made of four protein strands, each holding the mineral iron.
Where does protein digestion start?
stomach, break down by enzymes.
What takes place in the small intestine?
Enzymes continue breaking down protein peptides into single amino acids or di/tri peptides. Cells absorb amino acids and some larger peptides and release them into the bloodstream.
What are the roles of protein?
Structure and movement, enzymes, hormones, antibodies, transporting substances, maintaining fluid & electrolyte balance, maintain acid balance, blood clotting, providing energy and glucose.
What are the recommendation of protein intake?
0.8g protein / kg
10-15% of calorie intake from protein.
What is amino acid composition?
High quality protein : provide essential amino acids.
Low quality protein: does not provide all the essential amino acids.
What can excess protein intake cause?
- Heart disease
- Kidney disease
- adult bone loss
- cancer. (hard to separate from excess fat cause)
